Who you are actually, What is cricket / athletics for you?

My name is Harinder Sekhon from KL, Malaysia. I am a former national cricket player for Malaysia. I was part of the national team from 2016 to 2022. Now I am a current 2x world record holder for ‘Highest single leg jump’ & ‘Highest seated jump’. I am currently training and competing as a professional athlete in Long Jump. Besides being a professional athlete I am also a full time mathematics teacher in a private school here in Malaysia. I am very passionate about sports and motivating the youth.

One of your special childhood memories of playing cricket ?

I have won a lot of trophies personally and also for the team but one special moment for me was getting the ‘man of the match’ award in the state junior level final for my bowling performance which is not my main skill as a cricketer because I’m actually a batsman-keeper. Also scoring my first century was equally as special for me as it made me believe I was able to be a good cricketer.

Who is your role model in cricket and why?

My role model in cricket is Yuvraj Singh for his professionalism, gutsy performances and never say die attitude. He has always shown that the team so above anything and I also believe that. His attacking & sensational style of batting is my favorite. Whether its playing a solid knock or smashing the ball out of the park Yuvraj can do it all. My favorite moment was seeing him score 139 against Australia when he was just a new player & also his six sixes at the T20 world cup. When India toured Malaysia I was able to meet, talk & get a picture with him. It was an incredible moment personally for me.

Your Memorable Inning cricket or moments in athletics?

In athletics so far breaking two world records as a jumper for the ‘Highest single leg jump’ & ‘Highest seated jump’ is very special for me. In cricket scoring a half century against Zimbabwe U19 in a T20 match and winning the game was an incredible feeling. This was the team Zimbabwe used to play the U19 world cup. Being selected to play representative cricket after doing well in 1st grade in Queensland was also a great moment for me. I was one of the highest run scorers for my club there at the time.

Your Experience in recent tournament or league matches / athletics?

This year is my first full year competing as a long jumper & 100 meter sprinter. I have taken part in the local athletic open tournaments where I have made my personal best marks and will continue to keep pushing myself to improve further. In my most recent cricket tournament for the state we won the championship. It was a great journey with many happy moments & memories.

What advice would you give to young cricketers / athletes ?

The path to success is never an easy one. You will be tested & have to go through difficult periods from time to time. But this will show you how bad you really want what you think you want and it will also teach you how to achieve what you want. The failures will be plenty but just treat them as leaning opportunities. Never give up and always believe in yourself are the main factors I carry with me. I also truly believe anything is possible to achieve.
